Makeover of combined bedroom/artroom
My customer is an artist that wanted a complete makeover of her bedroom annex artroom. Due to the old room lacking good lighting, the atmosphere appeared dull and dreary. The room came across cluttered despite being a good size (8 metres long by 4 metres wide). She wanted to completely come away from the old colour scheme of purples, and the orange-brown doors.
As we talked about her life and interests, a love for gardening and nature stood out. This became my starting point. My customer gave me free reign concerning the colour scheme and the whole design. She is very pleased with the result.
Enjoy the following before and after photos:
On the artroom side of the space, the old layout had a big wardrobe along the wall (right), which was limiting the possibilities to change the floor plan. Art materials were stored in a cluttered looking open storage unit (left).
In the new plan the old wardrobe is removed, and a new bespoke wardrobe has been built that comes off the wall into the room and doubles as a divider between artspace and bedroom. The bedside part of the divider/wardrobe is panelled. The internal doors have been painted white.
The other side of the divider houses the wardrobe, consisting of three parts with six panelled doors. The top compartments of the new wardrobe/divider is open, to let light through. Above the wardrobe is more open space to the ceiling.
The old wardrobe with orange-brown stained doors.
Old wardrobe removed. Two new bespoke cupboars have been built in, blending in with the room in terms of materials and colours. Art materials are now stored behind doors. The oval swivel mirror is brings depth and interest to the space.

The bed has been turned around, facing the window.
The elements in the room seem random and disconnected.
The colour scheme and combinations of natural elements creates a harmonious, peaceful atmosphere.
The dressing table was melding into the background as the colour was too similar to the floor.
The dressing table was moved to the other side, and painted in a very dark brown, which now makes it stand out beautifully against the green walls and white skirting.
In the place of the dressing table a new bespoke bookcase/TV unit was built in.
In the old situation the TV stood out too much against the light wall.
My customer is good at growing plants, so she bought small plants that will grow a lot bigger over time.
Inspiring Environments created mood boards to communicate the style and atmosphere that would this space to life, and would make it into a unity yet with a diversity of related forms, shapes and patterns.
Starting point were images of light, young green, flowers, fruit, different textures of greenery, sunlit greenish glass and some darker green plants.
The main colour was derived from these images, for the walls up to the picture rail, is a fresh light green. The colour is calming as well as refreshing, vibrant as well as peaceful.
It is fresh and vibrant enough not to be too ‘cottagey’, yet not so bright that it jumps out at you.
Accent colours: For accents, like the picture of the white flower with very dark brown stamen: very dark brown and black, near whites, and a little bit of gold/bronze in a few items. The accent colours were used for the lamps, bedside tables, dressing table, mirrors, planters, cushions.
